Wangdue

WangdueWangdue Phodrang is one of the larger districts in Bhutan and the windiest of them all. Wangdue housed one of the most historically and architecturally significant Dzongs in the country until it was burnt down in 2013.

Today, Wangdue Phodrang is one of the busier districts due to the construction works at the Mega hydro-power project. Therefore, places near the construction sites are quite dusty and packed with construction vehicles and workers.

Places of interest:

  • Reconstruction site of the Dzong. Wangduephodrang Dzong was built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in 1638. The Dzong stood majestically on a hill that stands at the confluence of Puna Tsang chhu and Dang chhu before it was gutted down by fire in 2013.
  • Phobjikha Valley is a perfect example of people co-existing perfectly with the wildlife. The valley gained national and international recognition for foregoing their right to electricity in a bid to safeguard the habitat and passage for the black-necked crane. Today, the beautiful glacial valley is connected to electricity through an expensive underground rural electrification program undertaken by the Austrian government as a goodwill gesture.
  • Gangtey Goenpa is a sacred monastery perched on a hill overlooking the Phobjikha valley. There are various artifacts, sacred relics and other exhibits which include the supposed skin of a demoness.
