Tashigang

TashigangTashigang is located at an altitude of 1151m and is the largest district in Bhutan. It was once a commercial hub and an important administrative point for the entire eastern region. From 17th until the 20th century, entire eastern region was governed from the district.

Today, Tashigang is famous for its handicraft or hand loom products.

Places of interest:

  • Trashigang Dzong meaning the Fortress of the Auspicious Mountain acted as a power stronghold of eastern Bhutan. It was built in 1659 by the third Druk Desi Minjur Tempa and later reconstructed by the fourth Druk Desi Tenzin Rabgye in the 1680s.
  • Merak and Sakteng comprises of the Brokpas, semi-nomadic people whose livelihood mainly depend of herding yaks. These two remote eastern regions has now been opened to tourism. This seemingly inhospitable terrain is blessed with a scenic landscape and makes for an ideal trekking destination. These areas are known for their woolen textile, cheese produce and bamboo hats.
  • Khaling Blind School is the only school for the blind or visually impaired in the country. It is located just below the Khaling satellite town.
  • Khaling Handloom Centeris a project initiated by National Women Association of Bhutan (NWAB) with a sole aim of empowering rural women. The center looks at promoting traditional weaving practices by proving financial incentives and connecting these weavers to potential buyers.
  • Rangjung Yoedsel Choling Lhakhangis a majestic temple located on a hill overseeing Rangjung Town.
