Punakha

Getting aroundPunakha lies at an altitude of 1300 m and enjoys a temperate climate with relatively warm summers. The lush valleys and the weather makes it an ideal camping site and the two rivers, Pho(male) Chhu and Mo(female) chhu make Punakha an ideal kayaking and river rafting destination.

It served the headquarters of the central monk body and the national government until 1961. Today, it is winter residence of the monk body.

Places of interest:

  • Punakha Dzongsits at the confluence of the two rivers, Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu making the already beautiful Dzong a visual spectacle. It was built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and holds a special place in the history of Bhutan. The monastery inside the dzong holds the sacred relic Rangjung Kharsapani and the embalmed body of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel.
  • Chimmi Lhakhangalso known as the temple of fertility and is believed to have special powers of blessing couples who otherwise are unable to conceive with children. The temple was built in homage to Drukpa Kuenley, the ‘Divine Madman’ on a hill that is supposed to resemble the breast of the demon subdued by Drukpa Kuenlay.
  • Khamsum Yuellay Namgyel Templeis one of the newer temples in Punakha. An architectural marvel is one of its kind and took over 8 and a 1/2 years to complete. It was built by Her Majesty the Queen Mother for the well being of the kingdom and all sentient beings.
  • Khomo Tshachu and the Chhubu Tshachu (hot springs) in Punkha provides a perfect opportunity to relax. and let the healing properties of these hot spring work their magic on your tired bodies.
